S4: Medicine & Morphopsichology of Four Temperaments (Essene, Greek-Arabian & Ayurvedic keys)

If you recall, in the previous session on the free course of Vital Enarmonia, we explored the need to align Mind, Heart and Body with our true Soul Image and vital purpose, on the Seven Areas of activity: Leisure, Health, Economy, Work, Relationships, Masteries/Inner gifts and Self-knowledge to bring them out.

And today we have to delve a little more into the psycho-biological typologies or biotopes and their relationship with the four elements: Earth, Water, Air and Fire.

As we have already seen, there are four basic psycho-types: earthly/physical, watery/emotional, airy/mental and firy/passional personalities. These can be classified in three also, since firy types are emotional, but more impulsive.

And bear in mind that Earth, Water, Air and Fire can teach us a lot, but they must be armonized in Ether, the substance-energy that unites everything when real Love or integral Consciousness and Conscience break all chains, liberating Life from unnecessary bonds.

For instance, we can see that our body is strong or too rigid like the earth; flexible or unstable like water; scattered or agitated, like air; warm or fiery like fire. And the same happens with the emotions and the mind.

This is something that I discovered on my own, pondering on Essene teachings, and thus I realized it was the basis of all ancient medicine, not just the Essene, but also Graeco-Arabian or Unani Medicine and Indian Ayurveda, as we will see. And this helped me a lot to understand what was happening in my body years ago, when I went through a strong crisis, with allergies, systemic inflammations, intolerances...

Now, you might have heard something about the 4 Temperaments: Sanguine, Phlegmatic, Melancholic and Choleric, which are linked to the four Humors respectively: blood, phlegm, black bile and yellow bile. And this was a contribution of Galen of Pergamum in the second-third century of our era. But he was inspired by Hippocrates, the father of western medicine, who already in the 4th century linked the 4 humors to the 4 elements, because as Empedocles had already said, the 4 Elements are the four roots of everything.

In addition, both Hippocrates and Galen studied the Ayurvedic books of India, where the three bio-defects or doshas are discussed, although later on, doctor Sushruta (in 3rd century) added the blood type, as did Galen.

And all these systems are parallel, only a couple of elements change. So now I will give you clues from both of them so you can find yourself, because although we have a mixture of two temperaments, there is always one that predominates.

But two can never be in on person: the phlegmatic and choleric and the melancholic and sanguine.

Now, the sanguine temperament was linked to air by Galene, but you´ll see it fits better with Earth and earthly bonds. It is also linked with Spring, which, as you know, alters the blood.

Actually the Sanguine temperament is Vitalistic, Expressive, Optimistic, Friendly, Attentive, Funny, Not grouchy, Sociable, Enthusiastic vs Susceptible to temptations, too much party, Talkative, Indisciplined, Exaggerated ...

This manifests when the biotype is not balanced by a well tempered mind and calm.

Unbalance here can lead to circulation problems, high or low blood pressure,  dizziness, headaches, nosebleeds ...

My mom was a very sanguine type and she passed away from a sudden stroke. And she was active at home, ate little, but did not walk very much outside, spent too much time in a house that she did not enjoy, and she was frustrated not being able to see her remaining family, which lives rather far. And that sunk down her character, even though she was cheerful.

So it´s important to know these weaknesses to be more prevented against certain things, even we´re often absorbed by circumstances.

Anyway, then we have the phlegmatic character, which is traditionally associated with water but in Ayurveda it is the khafa dosha, which is associated with water and also with earth. The earth is stable and cold, while the water is humid and fluid, so by joining the two we get mud, which is soft, sticky… And these are emotional qualities. And its season is wet winter.

So the phlegmatic is Calm, Sociable, Compassionate, Patient, Diplomatic, Tolerant, Not grouchy but he can be too submissive, Simpleton, Unmotivated, Apathetic, Coward, Anxious, Self-compassionate, self-indulgent, etc.

His physical constitution is usually endomorphic, with great development of inner organs, bulky, not necessarily fat, but with volume. In their balance they have a very solid constitution, strong bones and tissues, otherwise they tend to be overweight, with accumulation of mucus or phlegm and water.

And because of this excess mucus, they tend to catch colds,  flus, and have respiratory or heart problems. This is the cause of most of the presumed deaths by a bug. All is due to inner imbalance.

And in winter the unbalance is greater, since phlegmatic people  have cravings for foods that are very mucous forming, such as ice cream, or bean soup, which increases mucus.

We will see what foods balance which types, when we get to the Section on Food.

Now, in third place, we have the melancholic temperament, which is associated with Air, which has to do with the mind and the nervous system. This type is usually of an ectomorphic constitution, rather thin. In India it is called Vata, and it is linked to Space, which is subtle and expansive, and to Air, which is cold, dry, irregular, unstable ... That is why its season of unbalance is dry Autumn.

I love Autumn, but it is when I get more cravings, being a classic Vata.

Now, the melancholic is Sensitive, Introspective, Compassionate, Lonely, Analítico, Good worker, Dreamy, an Idealist that fights for Justice but also Scattered, Nervous, Inconstant, Procrastinator, Pessimistic, Critical, Changeable, Sentimental, Sad, can be Vengeful, Calculating, Intellectual, Asocial, lacking trust ...

All this manifests itself when he is unbalanced by warm compassionate emotions. And nerves and dryness usually generates craving for dry food: nuts, potato chips, bread ...

The melancholic character can be quite a snacker. And this makes us sick or aggravates certain present pathologies, for it generates congestion, by excess of mucus and residues.

That is why the most common melancholic conditions are: nervousness, constipation, fatigue, arthritis, cold hands and feet due to lack of irrigation, digestive problems, dry skin, eczema, allergies due to lack of joy ...

In fact, during my health crisis, I discovered that melancholic comes from melas, black in Greek. And formerly it was associated with black bile, a dark liquid accumulated in people with melancholic imbalance, and that causes dark skin, dry patches. I experienced this to the extreme, and discovered that it is due to both congestion due to excess residues and blood clotting.

And finally, we have the choleric temperament, associated with yellow bile and fire. In India they call it Pitta, Fire, and it also linked to water, which can either turn it off or can boil, giving steam, passion.

The choleric season par excellence is Summer. And this type is Cold tempered, Efficient, Quick solving Problems, Self-Sufficient, Competitive, Energetic, Strong, Impatient, Explosive but Impetuous, Spiteful, Sarcastic, Dominant, Proud, full of Vanity.

They are usually of mesomorphic constitution, with developed muscles, in many cases because they like to do weight lifting and show their muscles to cover affective deficiencies, especially in the case of men or even women.

They also have a good digestive system, like blood types, and that can lead to gluttony, especially in Summer. Maybe they eat a lot of spicy foods, and sweat a lot. So they need to balance with something colder and juicy, like some fruit.

They can be very good at leading as a team, when they do not impose themselves or burn others with their ego.

And in case of great imbalance they can suffer: fever, vomiting attacks, jaundice, hepatitis and other liver diseases, an organ that suffers greatly from anger.

But with this I think it´s enough information. I´ll leave this written on the blog Song of Reality.

The next day we will surely explore the voice, its relationship with the Elements, and ways of expression.
